Streets Department
Gun Barrel City has approximately 95 miles of streets. The Streets Department is comprised of eight full time employees to maintain all job duties of the Streets Department. The duties encompass many activities such as; maintaining the streets, road side drainage, street signs, mowing - weed eating right of ways, and many other projects. Although the State Highways (334 and 198) go through our city we still have to maintain (23) subdivisions within our city limits. Our street reconstruction projects are limited due to the revenue available.

Without an ad valorem tax, the last 2 fiscal years our street reconstruction projects have total over 26 lane miles of road construction. The reconstruction of these roads was at a cost of over one million dollars. While the completion of these projects have significantly improved our city streets, the addition of an ad valorem tax would increase our capabilities of street reconstruction projects. An increase in city revenue would enable us to update some of the older equipment, increase manpower, and purchase additional materials. This in turn would make Gun Barrel City a better place to live and play.

The road reconstruction projects are the most expensive, because of the great quantities of materials, time and manpower. When reconstructing roads we make sure the ditches are draining and the base work is stabilized to ensure a good base for 2" inch overlay of asphalt. The main feeder roads into subdivisions were our first concern and we have tried to spread the work out evenly throughout the community. Due to the increased cost of materials this fiscal year 2008-2009, we will build/construct as many roads as possible.
