 | | | With a name like Gun Barrel City, you might think that the community has been around since the early days of Texas independence. However, the City of Gun Barrel was incorporated on May 12, 1969, soon after the construction of Cedar Creek Lake.
The name originated from Gun Barrel Lane, which connected Mabank and Payne Springs. According to local historians, the name was first used by J.C. Waits and is a reference to the relatively straight nature of the road. Gun Barrel Lane, eventually became State Highway 198.
According to the Handbook of Texas Online, the community has won second place (twice) in the Governor's Community Achievement Awards.
Today, Gun Barrel City is a thriving community that offers a quality of life that is difficult to find in the big city. Many residents choose to make their home in GBC due to the friendly nature of the local residents and the proximity of the community to Cedar Creek Lake. |
