 | | | Gun Barrel City is within the Mabank Independent School District. Elementary schools include Southside Elementary, Central Elementary, and Lakeview Elementary.
A new leading-edge high school campus opened in the fall of 2007. The new campus is adjacent to the old high school in Mabank. The old high school is being remodeled and will become the new middle school. In addition to Gun Barrel City, the high school serves Mabank, southeast Kaufman, southwest Van Zandt, and northwest Henderson counties, including parts of Seven Points.
Mabank High School was "Voted One of Texas Top 75 High Schools" in 2006 by Texas Monthly Magazine. It was also listed in the top 1,000 high schools by a U.S. News survey of more than 19,000 high schools nationwide in 2008. Mabank High School athletic teams compete in UIL competitions in District 13 of the 3A Class.
